A Story Of Forgiveness And Compassion

Sometimes people do things that eat at them for years. Something that haunts them, until they finally find a way to right their wrong.

I’m sure we have all done things that gnaw at you and you wish you can turn back the clock to make them write. I found this story of a man who had done just that.

Thirty years ago, he stole $200 worth of Clothing from his local Kmart. It must have eaten at him all these years. To try to make up for his act, he sends a letter confessing to his actions to the VP of Kmart and apologizing for his indiscretion.

But the story doesn’t stop there. In the letter, he enclosed a Money Order for $1,000 to help pay off Lay-Aways for customers who were less fortunate at the store he shoplifted at.

It just goes to show, that most people have a conscience and can turn a wrong into a right.  And after all these years, I am glad he has found his forgiveness.

About A Dog With Fleas

I have had a lot of life experiences the last year that I am hoping to share with the world. I may not have made the best decisions, but my life is fluid and I am learning everyday.

  1. That’s amazing. Paying for what other people have stolen due to necessity. I did once. It was steal or starve :-( There was four of us and we all took turns going in and taking different things. It was when I was working for a firm who promised all this stuff and then when you start working they say “no we just said that to get you here, you think we’re really going to do that?” Fortunately companies can’t do that now.

    • Sounds like you did what you had to do!! Stinks that they even promised all that to you in the first place and then it was a lie!

      • Yes it was. It was selling door to door, selling smoke detectors and fire extinguishers.
What they promised [what they didn't tell us]

We would have a fixed wage [if we sold a certain amount]
We would have rooms in hotels [Well, caravans]
We would have breakfast every morning [if we brought it]
We were not to use harsh selling methods [telling them their house burn down and they would die a slow agonizing death was fine though]

  2. Good way to make up for an error in his past…

  5. I’ve read similar stories to this (paying off other’s layaways) and I think this is wonderful.. For this man he cleared his heart and helped out a family at holiday time.. I just love the goodness in people!!

    • People really are good. Just wish these stories would be more of the focus on the media instead of all the bad things too. Maybe so much bad wouldn’t happen in the world. Or maybe that is the Pollyanna in me! :)
